Men’s Health Q & A

What are men’s health concerns?

Some common men’s health problems include:

Low testosterone

Testosterone is the male sex hormone that gives you your male sexual characteristics and plays a vital role in reproduction. If you don’t have sufficient testosterone in your body, you might experience distressing symptoms such as:

  • Loss of libido

  • Depression

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Loss of muscle mass

Prostate problems

The prostate gland produces semen that mixes with your sperm when you ejaculate. Prostate enlargement (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH) is a common problem that can cause urinary urgency and discomfort.

The prostate gland is walnut-sized in younger men but gradually increases in size as you get older, increasing the pressure it puts on the bladder and urethra.

These two conditions can also cause erectile dysfunction.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is a problem that means you can’t get or keep an erection when you want to have sex. While the occasional instance of having erection problems isn’t usually anything to worry about, if it’s happening regularly, you should visit Steese Immediate Care for help.

The causes of erectile dysfunction are usually treatable, but there are many possible reasons why you might be experiencing this problem. Your provider can diagnose the cause of your erectile dysfunction, and from there, prescribe the most appropriate treatment.

What are common kinds of cancer men are at risk for?

During your men’s health appointment, your provider at Steese Immediate Care may screen for common types of cancers affecting men, including:

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is a leading disease in men, second only to skin cancer. Most prostate cancers develop relatively slowly, but there are more aggressive types that progress far more quickly.

Prostate cancer is highly treatable if caught early. You can undergo a simple screening for prostate cancer, which is especially important if you’re over 40 and have a family history of the disease. All men over 50 should undergo a regular prostate exam.

Testicular cancer

Testicular cancer is far less common than prostate cancer, but it’s easy to detect with a simple testicle exam. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of checking your testicles for any changes or lumps and have your provider check your testicles annually from around the age of 20.

To keep yourself healthy and prevent men’s health problems, book a men’s health exam at Steese Immediate Care. You should also see the team if you have any symptoms of sexual health problems and for help with contraception.
